Editorial Policy
How we source, check, and maintain the information on NearbyTraders.
How directory listings are sourced
NearbyTraders listings are compiled from publicly available sources, primarily Google Business Profiles. We collect business names, addresses, phone numbers, websites, trade categories, ratings, and review counts from these public records.
We do not scrape private databases or purchase consumer data. All information displayed was publicly accessible at the time of collection.
What checks we do — and don't do
What we do:
- Review listings for basic consistency (e.g. valid phone number format, address in the correct geographic area)
- Remove obviously inactive or duplicate businesses where identified
- Flag businesses that appear on relevant public registers (e.g. Gas Safe, NICEIC, Checkatrade) based on publicly available data
- Refresh listing data periodically against public sources
What we do not do:
- We do not independently verify qualifications, insurance, or accreditations
- We do not vet, endorse, approve, or certify any business listed
- We do not guarantee the accuracy of any information displayed
- We do not visit premises, check references, or conduct background checks
Always verify credentials and details directly with the business before hiring.
How businesses are included or excluded
Inclusion: Any business that appears in public records for the relevant trade and location may be listed. There is no payment or application required for a standard listing.
Exclusion: Businesses may be removed if they are confirmed as permanently closed, have been flagged for serious complaints, or if the business requests removal.
"Top Rated" and "Best of" pages: These use objective criteria based on publicly available data — typically a minimum Google rating of 4.5 stars and visible public reviews. No business can pay for inclusion on these pages.
